Akron DSA Press Release on January 6 Vigil for Democracy
As socialists, we believe in democracy, freedom, and the collective ability of workers to create a better world. In order to do so, we must stand against fascism in all its forms. The insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 was a fascist uprising. Hundreds of heavily armed right wing extremists from around the United States gathered to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. Elected officials who are members of the Democratic Socialists of America may have been specifically targeted for violence. Though the fascists did not succeed in their coup attempt, it resulted in at least 5 deaths, numerous injuries, and trauma, and weeks of disruption for thousands of working class people in DC. Throughout the United States, working class people felt the shock. We cannot become complacent with the current veneer of political normalcy or distracted by the 24-hour news cycle and allow fascism to continue to spread.
One year later, the Akron Democratic Socialists of America will host a January 6 Vigil for Democracy at 6PM in Highland Square. This is one of more than 175 demonstrations around the United States. All who stand against fascism are welcome at this peaceful demonstration. We call upon our elected officials to ensure all responsible for the insurrection be removed from public service positions, to protect the integrity of elections, and to expand voting rights. We call upon our community to join us in promoting democracy in our government, our community organizations, and our workplaces. We must be ever vigilant to keep each other safe.
